Most money management firms specialize in only one investment style (Large Cap Growth, Small Cap Value, etc). Such firms typically encourage clients to utilize only that particular investment style in an effort to capture all of their clients' assets under their management. Although these accounts may hold many individual securities, they lack the other critical component of diversification.
Investment styles often experience long stretches of both good and poor performance relative to the others. Investors utilizing only one investment style face the daunting task of sticking with their chosen approach during long periods of underperformance even while others perform much better. True diversification is only achieved by (1) owning multiple individual securities and (2) owning multiple investment styles.
