TASO Volleyball Social Media Recommendations

Information taken from:

a) National Federation of State High School Associations
b) New Mexico Officials Association
c) USA Volleyball
d) Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association

While the use of social media can be a great tool for reconnecting with friends and staying in touch with family and colleagues, we as officials should remain aware of their public nature. With that in mind, here are a few recommendations for those that use social media.

Do’s

Remember, it isn’t what is said or what is meant; it is how the word is interpreted.
Be aware that posts are visible to the general public.
Think twice before you post.
Be mindful of your list of friends (coaches, booster clubs, and players).
Remember to keep things positive.

Don’ts

Post any derogatory comments about players, coaches, schools, fans or fellow officials.
Advertise where you are officiating at any time.
Be a "cheerleader" for any school, team, coach or player.
Post specifics about games, whether good or bad.
Start posting after you have had a rough game.
Post anything relating to the schools you have worked or will work.
Post details about other people’s assignments.

Remember that accountability and integrity should always be our guiding principles. Jeopardizing your impartiality or professionalism should never be a part of your actions or posts. In reality, officiating activities are topics that should not be a part of social media postings. For further information, refer to TASO’s Conflict of Interest Policy, Solicitation Policy and Code of Ethical Conduct Policy.

Rule of Thumb: Would you say this to someone face to face and feel it is appropriate?
